CHAPTER 7
Watching the omega gave me a bond with the pack I hadnât experienced before. It was a gentle looping. Liam was careful with the tie as he seemed to sense the conflict in my wolf. The night of the omegaâs arrival, and the strange moving house, camper, that Kevin, in human skin, had brought, I slept at the stairs as a guard until the alpha arrived. We talked for a while, the alphaâs link finding me through the wave of calming ripples sent from the omega being so near. Well, the alpha talked, I listened.
âI want you to heal, Toby. Lots of little things say you can come back from this and live a happy and somewhat normal life. Iâm okay if you want to do that as a wolf, but I think your aunt would like to see you as the Toby she remembers,â he said.
But that Toby was dead, broken in the crash. Everything else was wolf, beast, on the verge of rage, filled with pain and a need for blood, ripped in half, divided by an ocean of sadness, memories, and agony.
The alpha sent a flood of warmth through the pack bond tie heâd looped carefully around us. It wasnât a physical thing, more like flickers of light. Thin, but the heat was good on this chilly evening. Neither of us was inside the dwelling where the omega had retreated. Kevin, still in human form, dropped off a blanket from the den before patting me on the head and disappearing into the house.
âA new start for both you and Seb,â Liam continued. He motioned toward the camper where the omega had gone. âHeâs had a rough past. Someone hurt him.â
I barely suppressed a snarl at the thought.
Liam nodded, not really looking in my direction as he wandered around the camper, gaze vigilant. âThey may show up here. I need you to help me keep him safe.â
My wolf wanted to tear into him. Demand ownership of the omega, though we could see the colored threads of something tying them together, even if those ties were weak. I knew those ties would only fit correctly for them, sinking into each other, blending until there was no way to tell where the ties began or ended.
âWill you accept the pack bond?â Liam asked. âLet us help heal you?â
But I was fine. Well, mostly fine. When I didnât retreat, it was okay. The bridge of the omegaâs presence made it easier to cross the divide. I could layer myself over my wolf and not collapse in exhaustion from swimming across a mess of scattered memories.
We said nothing for a time, but the omega must have sensed us because he came to the door, and Liam ended up sitting near the bottom of the steps, only a few feet from me. He seemed sad when the omega went back inside without him. The whole thing made me smile. This bond wasnât going to be easy, no matter how those colored lines grew in strength each time they got closer.
